The Eagle's Nest - Our Online Classroom
Key Concepts
- Addition
- Sums to 10
- Commutative Property of Addition (Switcheroo Facts)
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to recall addition facts with sums to 10.
- Students will be able to demonstrate the commutative property of addition with sums to 10.
- Students will be able to use manipulatives to represent addition facts with sums to 10.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Greet students and introduce the topic: addition facts with sums to ten. Briefly review what addition means. - Flashcard Review (5 mins)
Show flashcards with addition facts that sum to ten (e.g., 3+7, 6+4). Have students say the answer aloud together. Emphasize 'switcheroo' facts (e.g., 3+7 and 7+3). - Manipulative Activity (10 mins)
Using gems, toys, or snacks, guide students to represent addition facts. For example, for 4+6, have them put 4 gems on one side of a paper and 6 gems on the other. Count to confirm the total is 10. Repeat with other facts. - Switcheroo Exploration (5 mins)
Demonstrate the 'switcheroo' concept by physically moving the gems from one side to the other. Explain that changing the order doesn't change the total (commutative property). - Independent Practice (5 mins)
Have students use their own manipulatives to explore different combinations that make 10. Encourage them to find all the pairs. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review all the addition facts to 10 learned in the lesson. Encourage memorization and practice.
Interactive Exercises
- Ten Frame Fun
Provide students with a ten frame. Have them use two different colored counters to represent different addition facts that equal ten. For example, 2 red counters and 8 blue counters show 2 + 8 = 10. - Number Bond Creation
Give students a number bond template with '10' at the top. Have them fill in the two parts of the number bond with different combinations of numbers that add up to ten.
Discussion Questions
- What happens when we change the order of the numbers we add? Does the answer change?
- Can you think of a time when knowing your addition facts to 10 would be helpful?
Skills Developed
- Addition fluency within 10
- Understanding the commutative property of addition
- Problem-solving using manipulatives
