Grade 1: Math Lesson #96 Drawing Congruent Shapes And Designs
The Eagle's Nest - Our Online Classroom
Key Concepts
- Congruent Shapes: Shapes that are the same shape and size.
- Shape: The form of an object (e.g., square, triangle, circle).
- Size: How big or small something is.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to define congruent shapes as shapes that are the same shape and size.
- Students will be able to identify congruent shapes from a group of shapes.
- Students will be able to draw congruent shapes.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Start by watching the video 'Grade 1: Math Lesson #96 Drawing Congruent Shapes And Designs'. As you watch, pay close attention to the definition of congruent shapes and the examples given. - Shape and Size Action (5 mins)
Practice the actions from the video! When I say "shape," make a triangle with your hands. When I say "size," stretch your arms out wide. Repeat the phrase 'Congruent means the same shape and the same size' with the actions. - Shape Hunt (10 mins)
Look around the classroom (or your house if learning remotely). Can you find two things that are congruent? Remember, they must be the same shape AND the same size! Draw them in your math notebook. - Geo Board Practice (10 mins)
If you have a Geo Board (or dot paper), try making shapes that are congruent. Make a shape on the Geo Board, then try to make the same shape and size in a different spot on the board. - Congruent Shape Drawing (10 mins)
On a piece of paper, draw a square. Now, draw another square that is the EXACT same size. You've just drawn two congruent squares! Try it with different shapes. - Quiz Time! (5 mins)
Complete the multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank quizzes to show what you've learned about congruent shapes.
Interactive Exercises
- Congruent Shape Sorting
Draw a variety of shapes on index cards (squares, circles, triangles, rectangles) with varying sizes. Have students sort the cards into groups of congruent shapes. - Dot Paper Drawings
Provide students with dot paper. Ask them to draw a shape on one part of the paper, then draw a congruent shape somewhere else on the paper.
Discussion Questions
- What does it mean for shapes to be congruent?
- Can two shapes be the same shape but not be congruent? Why or why not?
- Where do you see congruent shapes in the world around you?
Skills Developed
- Shape Recognition
- Visual Discrimination
- Fine Motor Skills (drawing)
