Lesson Description
Video Resource
Grade 1: Saxon Math Lesson #112 Identifying Fractional Parts of A Whole
The Eagle's Nest - Our Online Classroom
Key Concepts
- Fractions represent parts of a whole.
- A whole can be divided into equal parts.
- Different fractions represent different sized parts.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify one-half, one-third, one-fourth, one-sixth, and one-tenth of a whole.
- Students will be able to explain that a fraction represents a part of a whole.
- Students will be able to relate fractions to real-world objects.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by reviewing fractions learned previously (one-half, one-third, one-fourth). Show examples with drawings and ask students to identify them. Ask students if they've ever shared a snack with a friend and how they divided it. - Video Viewing (7 mins)
Watch the YouTube video 'Grade 1: Saxon Math Lesson #112 Identifying Fractional Parts of A Whole'. Encourage students to pay attention to how different fruits and a dollar are divided into fractions. - Discussion and Practice (10 mins)
After watching the video, discuss the new fractions introduced (one-sixth, one-tenth). Use real objects like apples, oranges, or paper plates to demonstrate dividing them into different fractional parts. Have students practice saying the fraction name for each part. - Fraction Hunt (8 mins)
Have students look around the classroom (or their home if remote) for objects that can be divided into fractions. For example, a sandwich cut in half, a pizza cut into slices, etc. Students should describe the object and the fraction it represents. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the fractions learned in the lesson. Emphasize that the bottom number of a fraction tells us how many total pieces make up the whole. Reiterate the real-world application of fractions, such as sharing and baking.
Interactive Exercises
- Fraction Drawing
Provide students with paper and crayons. Ask them to draw a circle and divide it into halves, fourths, and sixths. Have them color one part of each circle and label it with the corresponding fraction (1/2, 1/4, 1/6). - Fraction Sorting
Prepare cards with pictures of objects divided into different fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4). Have students sort the cards into groups based on the fraction represented.
Discussion Questions
- What are some things you can share with your friends or family that you might need to cut into fractions?
- Which is bigger, one-half of an apple or one-fourth of an apple? Why?
Skills Developed
- Fraction identification
- Understanding part-whole relationships
- Visual representation of fractions
