Grade 1: Saxon Math Lesson #116 Addition Facts - The Last Eight Facts
The Eagle's Nest - Our Online Classroom
Key Concepts
- Addition facts (specifically: 5+3, 6+3, 7+4, 7+5, 8+3, 8+4, 8+5, 8+6)
- Memorization strategies for addition facts
- Understanding the meaning of addition
- Using manipulatives (cubes, blocks) to visualize addition
- Commutative property of addition ('switcheroo' facts)
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to recall the answers to the eight targeted addition facts.
- Students will be able to use manipulatives to solve addition problems.
- Students will be able to identify and apply the commutative property of addition.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by welcoming students and explaining that today they will be learning the last eight addition facts. Emphasize how far they've come and how close they are to mastering all their facts! - Video Viewing (10 mins)
Play the video 'Grade 1: Saxon Math Lesson #116 Addition Facts - The Last Eight Facts.' Encourage students to pay close attention to the facts, the strategies presented, and the manipulatives used. - Fact Review and Memorization (10 mins)
Write the eight addition facts on the board: 5+3, 6+3, 7+4, 7+5, 8+3, 8+4, 8+5, and 8+6. Review each fact aloud as a class. Discuss memorization techniques (flashcards, repetition, songs). - Manipulative Practice (10 mins)
Provide students with linking cubes or other small manipulatives. Have them use the manipulatives to represent each addition fact and find the answer. Encourage counting on as a strategy. Example: for 7+4, start with 7 cubes and then add 4 more while counting '8, 9, 10, 11'. - "Switcheroo" Activity (5 mins)
Write out the switcheroo facts alongside the originals (3+5, 3+6, 4+7, 5+7, 3+8, 4+8, 5+8, 6+8). Discuss that the order of the numbers doesn't change the answer. Have students use manipulatives to prove this. - Game Time! (5 mins)
Play a quick game to reinforce the facts. For example, call out one of the addition facts and have students quickly shout out the answer.
Interactive Exercises
- Cube Creations
Students use linking cubes to build and solve each of the eight addition facts. They can then draw a picture of their cube creation and write the equation below it. - Fact Flashcards
Students create flashcards for each of the eight addition facts. On one side, they write the equation (e.g., 5+3). On the other side, they write the answer (e.g., 8). They can then use these flashcards to practice memorizing the facts.
