- Representing numbers with blocks
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify the tens and ones digits in a two-digit number.
- Students will be able to add multiples of 10 to a two-digit number using place value understanding.
- Students will be able to represent addition problems using blocks (drawings or manipulatives).
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Start by reviewing place value. Ask students what the numbers 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 mean. Show them blocks of ten and individual blocks to represent these numbers. - Video Time (7 mins)
Play the Khan Academy video: 'Understanding place value while adding tens'. Ask students to pay attention to how the blocks are used to show the numbers. - Practice with Blocks (10 mins)
Give each student (or pair of students) blocks of ten and individual blocks. Have them represent numbers like 23, 41, 35. Then, have them add 30 to each number and show how the blocks change. For instance, 23 + 30. They should start with 2 tens and 3 ones, then add 3 more tens. What do they have now? - Worksheet Activity (10 mins)
Provide a worksheet with addition problems like 14 + 20, 25 + 40, 32 + 10. Have students solve the problems by drawing blocks or writing out the tens and ones. - Wrap-up (3 mins)
Review the main points of the lesson. Ask students to explain in their own words how to add tens to a two-digit number using place value.
Interactive Exercises
- Place Value Bingo
Create bingo cards with numbers like 23, 45, 17, etc. Call out '2 tens and 3 ones', and students mark the corresponding number. The first to get bingo wins! - Adding Tens Game
Use a number line or a hundreds chart. Start at a number and roll a die (or use a spinner) to determine how many tens to add. Students move along the number line or chart to find the answer.
