Adding Fun with Regrouping!
Lesson Description
Video Resource
Regrouping to add 1-digit number | Addition and subtraction | 1st grade | Khan Academy
Khan Academy
Key Concepts
- Place Value (Tens and Ones)
- Regrouping (Making a ten from ones)
- Addition
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify the tens and ones place in a two-digit number.
- Students will be able to add a one-digit number to a two-digit number with regrouping.
- Students will be able to explain the process of regrouping using manipulatives or drawings.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by reviewing place value. Ask students what the numbers in 23 mean (2 tens and 3 ones). Use base-ten blocks to visually represent this. Ask them if they remember what happens when you have more than 9 ones. - Video Viewing (7 mins)
Watch the Khan Academy video 'Regrouping to add 1-digit number'. Pause at key points (e.g., when Sal introduces the problem and when he regroups) to ask clarifying questions. - Guided Practice (10 mins)
Work through several addition problems as a class (e.g., 18 + 5, 26 + 7). Use base-ten blocks or drawings to model the regrouping process. Emphasize the language of 'making a ten'. - Independent Practice (10 mins)
Students complete addition problems with regrouping on their own, using provided worksheets or manipulatives. Circulate to provide support and answer questions. - Wrap-up (3 mins)
Review the key concept of regrouping. Ask students to explain in their own words why we need to regroup when adding.
Interactive Exercises
- Base-Ten Block Addition
Provide students with base-ten blocks. Give them addition problems that require regrouping. Have them physically manipulate the blocks to model the process of making a ten and regrouping it to the tens place. - Drawing Regrouping
Have students draw tens and ones to represent addition problems with regrouping. They should circle groups of ten ones and show how they become a ten in the tens column.
Discussion Questions
- What does it mean to regroup?
- Why do we regroup when adding ones and getting more than 9?
- Can you think of a time when you've used regrouping outside of math class (e.g., trading ten pennies for a dime)?
