Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students if they have ever played a number game or found something that was missing. Introduce the concept of a 'number train' and explain that some of the numbers are missing. Tell them they will become number detectives to find the missing numbers. - Video Time (5 mins)
Play the 'What's the Missing Number' video by Harry Kindergarten Music. Encourage students to sing along and try to identify the missing numbers as they appear on the screen. - Guided Practice (10 mins)
After the video, write a few number sequences on the board (e.g., 12, 13, __, 15, 16 or 45, __, 47, 48). Guide students through identifying the missing number in each sequence. Ask them to explain how they figured out the answer. - Independent Practice (10 mins)
Provide students with a worksheet or a whiteboard with pre-written number sequences with missing numbers. Have them independently fill in the missing numbers. Circulate to provide support as needed. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the answers to the independent practice. Discuss any challenges students faced and reinforce the concept of number sequencing. Play the video again as a fun review.
Interactive Exercises
- Number Line Game
Create a large number line on the floor using tape or chalk. Call out a number sequence with a missing number and have a student jump to the correct missing number on the number line. - Missing Number Cards
Create flashcards with number sequences and a blank space for the missing number. Show the cards to the students and have them write down the missing number on a whiteboard or piece of paper.
