Key Concepts

  • Skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s
  • Counting backwards
  • Odd numbers

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to skip count forward by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
  • Students will be able to count backward from a given number.
  • Students will be able to identify odd numbers.

Educator Instructions

  • Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about counting. Ask them if they have ever tried skip counting. Explain that skip counting is counting by a number other than 1 (like counting by 2s). Tell them they will be learning through a fun workout video!
  • Video Time! (10 mins)
Play the Jack Hartmann "Workout & Count" video. Encourage students to participate in the exercises and sing along while counting.
  • Practice Skip Counting by 5s (10 mins)
Lead the class in skip counting by 5s, starting from 5. Write the numbers on the board (5, 10, 15, 20...). Then, start at 55 and count by 5s again, writing them down. Do jumping jacks while counting!
  • Practice Skip Counting by 2s (10 mins)
Lead the class in skip counting by 2s, starting from 2. Write the numbers on the board (2, 4, 6, 8...). Then, start at 52 and count by 2s again, writing them down. Do cha-cha-cha steps or scissors motion while counting!
  • Practice Counting by 10s (10 mins)
Lead the class in skip counting by 10s, starting from 10. Write the numbers on the board (10, 20, 30, 40...). Then, count backwards by 10s starting from 100 (100, 90, 80...). Do arm circles while counting!
  • Identifying Odd Numbers (10 mins)
Explain that odd numbers cannot be divided evenly into groups of two. Write a few single-digit odd numbers on the board (1, 3, 5, 7, 9). Then, count together as a class from 1 to 19, only saying the odd numbers out loud. Do washing machine motions while counting!
  • Counting Backwards (5 mins)
Practice counting backwards from 49 to 40, just like in the video. Ask students to suggest other numbers to start from and count back from. Do arm curls while counting backwards!

Interactive Exercises

  • Number Line Hop
Create a number line on the floor (using tape or chalk). Call out a skip counting sequence (e.g., count by 5s) and have students hop along the number line to each number.
  • Clap and Count
The teacher claps a certain number of times (e.g., 3 claps). Students then continue counting by 2s or 5s, starting from the teacher's number.
