Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what counting is. Then, introduce the concept of 'skip counting' as counting by a number other than 1 (like 2, 5, or 10). Tell them that skip counting can make counting lots of things faster! Show the Koo Koo Skip Counting video. - Video Viewing (5 mins)
Watch the Koo Koo - Skip Counting video. Encourage students to sing along and pay attention to the numbers being skipped. - Discussion and Practice (10 mins)
After the video, ask students what numbers they heard in the song. Focus on skip counting by 2. Write the skip counting sequence of 2 on the board (2, 4, 6, 8, 10) and have the class read it together. Use manipulatives (like counters or blocks) to demonstrate skip counting by 2. - Activity: Skip Counting with Objects (10 mins)
Give each student a set of objects (e.g., 20 blocks, 20 beads). Have them practice skip counting by 2, physically grouping the objects into sets of 2 and counting the groups. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review what skip counting is and why it's useful. Briefly preview that in future lessons, they will learn to skip count by other numbers (5s, 10s).
Interactive Exercises
