Lesson Description
Video Resource
BrainPOP Jr. - Solid Shapes
R.TizzleTheTVAndVideoFan 2020 Dennis Teller
Key Concepts
- Identifying cubes, rectangular prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones, and spheres.
- Understanding the attributes of solid shapes (faces, edges, vertices).
- Recognizing real-world examples of solid shapes.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify and name cubes, rectangular prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones, and spheres.
- Students will be able to describe the attributes of each solid shape (faces, edges, vertices/corners).
- Students will be able to identify real-world objects that resemble different solid shapes.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what shapes they already know. Briefly review 2D shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle). Tell them that today they will learn about 3D or Solid shapes! - Video Viewing (5 mins)
Play the BrainPOP Jr. - Solid Shapes video. Encourage students to pay attention to the different shapes and their features. - Shape Exploration (10 mins)
After the video, show real-world examples of each shape (e.g., a tissue box for a rectangular prism, a ball for a sphere, an ice cream cone for a cone). Let students handle the objects (if available) and discuss their attributes (flat sides, curved sides, pointy corners). - Shape Sorting Activity (10 mins)
Divide students into small groups. Provide each group with a set of pre-cut shape cards. Have them sort the cards into groups based on the type of solid shape. Circulate and assist as needed. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the shapes learned in the lesson. Ask students to give examples of where they might see these shapes in their everyday lives.
Interactive Exercises
- Shape Scavenger Hunt
Have students walk around the classroom and find objects that resemble the solid shapes they learned about. They can draw the objects they find and label them with the correct shape name.
Discussion Questions
- What is one thing that makes a cube different from a rectangular prism?
- Can you think of something in this classroom that is shaped like a cylinder?
- What shape has a curved surface and can roll?
Skills Developed
- Shape recognition
- Spatial reasoning
