- Subtraction as taking away
- Understanding the symbols + and -
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to add two groups of fruits together to find the total number of fruits.
- Students will be able to subtract a number of fruits from a larger group to find how many are left.
- Students will be able to identify when to add or subtract based on simple word problems.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Start by asking students what their favorite fruits are. Briefly discuss how we can count fruits. Introduce the idea that we can put fruits together (addition) and take them away (subtraction). - Watch the Video (5 mins)
Play the Khan Academy video 'Pieces of fruit | Basic addition and subtraction | Early Math | Khan Academy'. Encourage students to pay attention to how the fruits are added and subtracted. - Discuss the Video (5 mins)
After the video, ask students what they saw in the video. Ask them to explain how the person in the video added the fruits and how they subtracted them. - Fruit Addition Activity (10 mins)
Use real fruits (if available) or drawings of fruits. Create simple addition problems like: 'We have 2 apples and 3 bananas. How many fruits do we have in all?' Have the students count and find the total. Write the problem on the board as 2 + 3 = 5. - Fruit Subtraction Activity (10 mins)
Use the same fruits or drawings. Create simple subtraction problems like: 'We have 5 oranges and we eat 2 of them. How many oranges are left?' Have the students take away the appropriate number of fruits and count the remaining ones. Write the problem on the board as 5 - 2 = 3. - Word Problem Practice (10 mins)
Present simple word problems involving adding and subtracting fruits. For example: 'Lily has 4 strawberries. Her friend gives her 3 more strawberries. How many strawberries does Lily have now?' and 'Tom has 7 grapes. He eats 1 grape. How many grapes does Tom have left?' Have students solve the problems using drawings or by counting on their fingers. - Assessment (10 mins)
Administer the multiple choice and fill in the blank quiz.
Interactive Exercises
- Fruit Basket Math
Create a 'fruit basket' (a box or container) with different types of fruits (or pictures). Call out addition or subtraction problems and have students physically add or remove fruits from the basket to solve them.
