Lesson Description
Video Resource
Addition with regrouping | Addition and subtraction within 100 | Early Math | Khan Academy
Khan Academy
Key Concepts
- Place Value (Tens and Ones)
- Regrouping (Making a ten)
- Addition
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify the tens and ones place in a two-digit number.
- Students will be able to add two-digit numbers with regrouping using visual aids (blocks).
- Students will be able to explain the process of regrouping in their own words.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about adding numbers. Review the concept of place value (tens and ones) using base-ten blocks or drawings. Ask them to show you 35 and 27 with the blocks. - Watch the Video (7 mins)
Play the Khan Academy video "Addition with regrouping | Addition and subtraction within 100 | Early Math | Khan Academy." Instruct students to pay close attention to how the presenter uses blocks to represent the numbers and how they regroup. - Guided Practice (10 mins)
Work through a similar addition problem (e.g., 28 + 14) on the board, using base-ten blocks or drawings to illustrate each step. Emphasize the process of regrouping when the sum of the ones is greater than 9. Have students explain each step as you go. - Independent Practice (10 mins)
Provide students with worksheets or manipulatives to practice addition with regrouping on their own. Circulate to provide support and answer questions. Examples: 19 + 23, 36 + 15, 47 + 24. - Wrap Up (3 mins)
Review the main concepts of the lesson. Ask students to explain in their own words what regrouping means and why it is necessary. Briefly introduce the concept of carrying the one.
Interactive Exercises
- Block Building Addition
Students use base-ten blocks to represent two-digit numbers and physically combine the blocks to add them. They must regroup if they have more than 9 ones. Have them write down the numbers and the solution. - Drawing Regrouping
Students draw tens and ones to represent addition problems. They circle groups of ten ones to show regrouping and then write the answer.
Discussion Questions
- What happens when we add the ones and get a number bigger than 9?
- Why do we need to regroup?
- Can you think of a time when you've had to regroup in real life (e.g., counting coins)?
Skills Developed
- Addition with regrouping
- Place value understanding
- Problem-solving
