Begin by asking students what they already know about counting. Review counting by 10s. Explain that today they will learn a new way to count - by 100s! Tell them it's like super-fast counting. - Video Viewing (7 mins)
Play the Khan Academy video: 'Skip counting by 100 example | Addition and subtraction within 100 | Early Math | Khan Academy'. Encourage students to follow along and pay attention to how the numbers change. - Guided Practice (10 mins)
After the video, write the number 23 on the board. Ask students what number comes next if we are counting by 100s. (123). Continue with 223, 323, 423, etc. Emphasize that only the hundreds place is changing. Do this with different starting numbers (e.g., 17, 54). - Independent Practice (10 mins)
Provide students with a worksheet with number lines and starting numbers. Have them fill in the missing numbers by skip counting by 100s. Example: 35, ___, ___, ___, ___. - Wrap-up (3 mins)
Review what they learned about skip counting by 100s. Ask them where they might see skip counting in the real world (e.g., counting money). Congratulate them on becoming counting superheroes!
