Key Concepts

  • Identifying US coins (penny, nickel, dime, quarter)
  • Knowing the value of each coin (1 cent, 5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents)
  • Adding coin values to find the total amount

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to identify pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.
  • Students will be able to state the value of each coin.
  • Students will be able to add the values of different coins together to find the total amount in cents.

Educator Instructions

  • Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students if they know about money. What do we use money for? What are the different types of coins they have seen? Introduce the terms penny, nickel, dime, and quarter. Tell them they're going to watch a video to learn more about coins and how to add them up.
  • Video Viewing (7 mins)
Play the YouTube video: Know Your Money - US Coins Counting for 1st Grade | Kids Academy. Encourage students to pay attention to the value of each coin and how the teacher adds them together.
  • Discussion (5 mins)
After the video, have a class discussion to review the main points. Ask questions about the value of each coin and how the teacher added them in the video. Write down the values on the board as a reminder (Penny = 1 cent, Nickel = 5 cents, Dime = 10 cents, Quarter = 25 cents).
  • Practice Problems (10 mins)
Work through a few example problems together as a class. For example: "If you have a nickel and a penny, how many cents do you have?" Write the problem on the board (5 + 1 = 6). Then, have the students solve a few more problems independently or in pairs using manipulatives (real or play coins) to help them.
  • Wrap-up (3 mins)
Review the main concepts of the lesson. Ask students what they learned about coins and counting money. Tell them they will get to play some more games with money tomorrow.

Interactive Exercises

  • Coin Sorting
Provide students with a bag of mixed coins (real or play). Have them sort the coins into groups based on their type (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters).
  • Coin Matching
Create a worksheet with pictures of coins and their values. Have students draw lines to match each coin to its correct value.
  • Money War
Each pair of students get a deck of coin cards (penny, nickel, dime, quarter). Each student flips a card and the one with the highest value wins and gets to keep the cards. Winner is the one with the most cards.
