Kids Academy
Key Concepts
- Number Sequence
- Preceding Number
- Following Number
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify the number that comes immediately before a given number.
- Students will be able to identify the number that comes immediately after a given number.
- Students will be able to use a number line to visualize number sequence.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by reviewing counting from 1 to 20 as a class. Explain that today, we'll be learning about the numbers that come right before and right after other numbers, like finding friends in a line. - Video Viewing (7 mins)
Watch the Kids Academy video 'Counting Practice - 1st Grade'. Pay attention to how the teacher uses number lines and addition/subtraction to find the missing numbers. - Number Line Practice (8 mins)
Draw a large number line on the board, starting from 1 and going to 30. Call on students to identify the number before and after various numbers within that range. For example, 'What number comes before 15? What number comes after 22?' - Worksheet Activity (10 mins)
Distribute worksheets with number sequences. Students will fill in the missing numbers that come before and after the given numbers. Start with easier numbers (1-20) and progress to slightly more challenging numbers (up to 100), similar to the video's examples. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the answers on the worksheet as a class. Ask students what strategies they found most helpful (number line, counting, etc.). Reinforce the concept that the number before is one less, and the number after is one more.
Interactive Exercises
- Number Line Hop
Create a large number line on the floor with tape. Call out a number, and have a student hop to the number that comes before or after. - Partner Practice
Have students work in pairs. One student says a number, and the other student has to say the number that comes before and after.
