Key Concepts

  • Coin identification (penny, dime, quarter)
  • Value of coins (1 cent, 10 cents, 25 cents)
  • Adding multiple coin values

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to identify pennies, dimes, and quarters.
  • Students will be able to state the value of a penny, dime, and quarter.
  • Students will be able to add the values of multiple coins to determine a total amount.

Educator Instructions

  • Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they know about money and different kinds of coins. Show them real coins (penny, dime, quarter) and have them identify each one. Briefly discuss what they can buy with money.
  • Video Viewing (5 mins)
Play the 'Coins for Kids' video from Kids Academy. Encourage students to pay attention to how the teacher identifies the coins and adds their values.
  • Guided Practice (10 mins)
After the video, review the coins and their values. Work through a few example problems together, similar to the one in the video, on the whiteboard or using physical coins. Emphasize lining up the numbers correctly when adding.
  • Independent Practice (10 mins)
Provide students with a worksheet (or create one) with similar problems to the video. Have them count the coins and determine the total value. Provide assistance as needed.
  • Wrap-up & Maze (5 mins)
Review the answers to the worksheet. Then, engage students in a class discussion about what kinds of treats they could buy with different amounts of money. Finally, do a similar maze to the video, or act it out in the classroom with candy or toy rewards!

Interactive Exercises

  • Coin Sorting
Provide students with a collection of mixed coins (pennies, dimes, and quarters) and have them sort the coins into separate groups.
  • Coin Matching
Create cards with pictures of coins and their values (e.g., a picture of a dime and the number 10). Have students match the coins with their corresponding values.
