- Students will be able to solve word problems involving the addition of three numbers.
- Students will be able to count and identify quantities of objects up to 20.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about addition. Show them the Boddle Learning video. Tell them that they will be learning how to add three numbers together. - Counting Fruits (10 mins)
Watch the first part of the video where Irene counts the fruits. Pause the video after each type of fruit is counted. Ask the students to write down the number of apples, oranges, and strawberries. Then, have them add the numbers together to find the total number of fruits. Discuss the answer as a class. - Toy Counting (10 mins)
Watch the next part of the video where Irene counts her toys. Again, pause the video after each type of toy is counted. Have students write down the number of cars, dolls, and balls. Have them add the numbers to find the total number of toys. Share answers as a class. - Flower Counting (10 mins)
Watch the final part of the video about the flowers. Have students follow along with the addition problem as it is shown in the video. Then, create similar flower-addition problems on the board and have students solve them independently or in small groups. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the main concepts of the lesson. Ask students to share what they learned and how they can use addition in their daily lives.
Interactive Exercises
- Fruit Basket Addition
Provide students with pictures of different fruits (apples, bananas, grapes). Assign a number to each fruit (e.g., apple = 2, banana = 3, grapes = 1). Have students create their own fruit baskets with different combinations of fruits and add the numbers together to find the total value of their basket. - Toy Store Math
Set up a pretend toy store with different toys (cars, dolls, blocks). Assign a number value to each toy. Give students a certain amount of pretend money and have them choose three toys to buy. They need to add up the cost of the three toys to see if they have enough money.
