Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about adding. What happens when you add? Introduce the idea of adding 2 to a number. Tell them they will learn their addition facts for 2 by watching a fun video! - Video Viewing (5 mins)
Play the Jack Hartmann video "Learning My Addition Facts (All Mixed Up) | Addition Facts for 2." Encourage students to sing along and try to answer the questions before the video gives the answer. - Guided Practice (10 mins)
After the video, write some of the addition problems from the video on the board (e.g., 2 + 3, 2 + 7, 2 + 10). Ask students to solve them together as a class. Use fingers, counters, or drawings to help students visualize the addition. Focus on the strategy of 'counting on' by 2. - Independent Practice (10 mins)
Give each student a worksheet with a mix of addition problems involving adding 2 to numbers from 0 to 10. Have them solve the problems independently. Encourage them to use the counting-on strategy or any other strategy that works for them. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the answers to the worksheet problems. Ask students to share their favorite addition fact for 2. Remind them to practice their addition facts at home.
Interactive Exercises
- Number Line Addition
Draw a number line on the board from 0 to 12. Call out an addition problem (e.g., 2 + 5). Have a student start at 2 and jump 5 spaces to find the answer. - Two More Game
Start with a number (e.g., 3). Each student takes a turn adding 2 to the previous number (3 + 2 = 5, 5 + 2 = 7, etc.). Continue until you reach a target number or run out of time.
