- Number Bonds
- Addition
- Subtraction
- Related Facts
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify the numbers within a fact family.
- Students will be able to demonstrate the relationship between addition and subtraction within a fact family.
- Students will be able to complete number bonds to show addition and subtraction relationships.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about addition and subtraction. Introduce the concept of 'families' of numbers that work together. - Watch the Numberock Video (5 mins)
Play the 'Facts Family Song | Addition & Subtraction with Number Bonds' video. Encourage students to sing along and pay attention to how the numbers are related. - Discussion and Examples (10 mins)
After watching the video, discuss the examples shown (9, 8, 17 and 7, 3, 10). Explain how these numbers form a fact family because they are related through addition and subtraction. Write the fact families on the board: 9 + 8 = 17, 8 + 9 = 17, 17 - 9 = 8, 17 - 8 = 9. Repeat for 7, 3, 10. - Number Bond Practice (10 mins)
Draw number bonds on the board. Provide students with a 'whole' number at the top of the bond and one of the 'parts'. Have them fill in the missing part. For example: Whole: 10, Part: 6, Missing Part: ?. Then, have them write the two addition and two subtraction sentences that go with that number bond. - Group Activity (10 mins)
Divide students into small groups. Give each group a set of number cards (0-20). Have them work together to create fact families and write down the related addition and subtraction sentences. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the main concepts of fact families and number bonds. Ask students to share what they learned and answer any remaining questions.
Interactive Exercises
- Fact Family Matching Game
Create cards with individual numbers. Students match the numbers to create fact families. Then, they write the addition and subtraction equations for each family. - Number Bond Worksheet
Provide a worksheet with various number bond diagrams. Students fill in the missing numbers to complete the bonds and write the corresponding addition and subtraction equations.
