Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about counting. Ask if they know how to count by tens. Introduce the concept of skip counting as a faster way to count. Show the Numberock video 'Skip Counting by 10 Song for Kids'. - Watch & Sing Along (5 mins)
Play the video again. Encourage students to sing along and pay attention to the numbers as they appear on the screen. Point out the visual aids in the video (hot air balloon, mountain) and how they relate to counting by 10s. - Counting Practice (10 mins)
Use a number line or hundreds chart. Point to each number as the class counts together by 10s, starting from 10 and going to 100. Repeat counting backwards from 100 to 10. Then use manipulatives such as blocks or counters to demonstrate counting in groups of 10. - Hands-on Activity (10 mins)
Divide students into pairs. Give each pair a set of ten small objects (e.g., beans, buttons). Have them create groups of 10 and practice counting them. Ask questions like, 'How many beans are in 3 groups?' - Assessment & Wrap-up (5 mins)
Administer a short multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank quiz to assess students' understanding of skip counting by 10s. Review the key concepts and encourage students to continue practicing at home.
Interactive Exercises
- Number Line Hop
Create a large number line on the floor. Have students hop from number to number, counting by 10s as they go. - Counting Jar
Fill a jar with objects. Have students estimate how many objects are in the jar. Then, have them count the objects by grouping them into tens to check their estimate.
