Lesson Description
Video Resource
Grade 2: Math - Fact Families Worksheet | Kids Academy
Kids Academy
Key Concepts
- Fact families consist of three numbers.
- Addition and subtraction are related operations.
- The biggest number in a fact family is used in subtraction problems.
- Understanding the concept of 'making sense' in math problems.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify the numbers in a fact family.
- Students will be able to write two addition and two subtraction equations for a given fact family.
- Students will be able to determine if a set of facts form a fact family.
- Students will be able to relate addition to subtraction through the concept of fact families.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by reviewing addition and subtraction. Ask students what they know about related facts. Introduce the term 'fact family' and explain that it's like a family of numbers that always go together. - Video Viewing (10 mins)
Play the Kids Academy video 'Grade 2: Math - Fact Families Worksheet | Kids Academy'. Encourage students to pay attention to how the 'number house' is used to organize fact families. - Building Number Houses (15 mins)
Guide students to create their own number houses on paper. Use examples from the video (9, 13, 22 and 17, 8, 25) to demonstrate how to fill in the house with the correct numbers. Emphasize that the largest number goes at the top of the house (in the roof). Then write out the four equations that belong to the fact family – two addition and two subtraction. - Worksheet Practice (15 mins)
Provide students with a worksheet containing various sets of numbers. For each set, they should first determine if it forms a fact family. If it does, they should create a number house and write out the four related equations. If not, they should explain why it doesn't work. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the concept of fact families and their relationship to addition and subtraction. Ask students to share any challenges they faced and how they overcame them.
Interactive Exercises
- Fact Family Sort
Create a set of cards, some with fact family equations and some with unrelated equations. Have students sort the cards into two piles: 'Fact Family' and 'Not a Fact Family'. - Number House Game
Divide students into small groups and give each group a set of three numbers. Have them work together to create a number house and write out the four related equations. The first group to correctly complete the task wins.
