Rounding 1: Tens - OLD Math: Level D for Kids!
Miacademy Learning Channel
Key Concepts
- Place Value (Tens and Ones)
- Rounding Rules (5 or more, round up; 4 or less, round down)
- Estimation
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify the tens and ones place in a two-digit number.
- Students will be able to round two-digit numbers to the nearest ten using the rounding rules.
- Students will be able to explain how rounding can be used to estimate a sum in a real-world context.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students if they've ever estimated a price at the store (like in the video!). Discuss what it means to 'get close' to a number. Introduce the term 'rounding' as a way to make numbers easier to work with. - Video Viewing (7 mins)
Play the Miacademy video 'Rounding 1: Tens - OLD Math: Level D for Kids!'. Encourage students to pay attention to the rounding rules and the examples given. - Guided Practice (10 mins)
Write several two-digit numbers on the board (e.g., 24, 37, 51, 68, 85). For each number, guide students through the rounding process: 1. Identify the digit in the tens place. 2. Identify the digit to the right (ones place). 3. Apply the rounding rule: If the ones digit is 5 or more, round the tens digit up. If the ones digit is 4 or less, the tens digit stays the same. 4. Replace the ones digit with a zero. - Real-World Application (8 mins)
Present a word problem similar to the one in the video: 'You want to buy a toy for $18 and a book for $23. About how much money do you need?' Guide students to round each number to the nearest ten ($20 + $20 = $40) to estimate the total cost. - Independent Practice (10 mins)
Provide students with a worksheet containing various two-digit numbers to round to the nearest ten. Include some word problems that require estimation using rounding.
Interactive Exercises
- Number Line Rounding
Draw a number line from 10 to 20 on the board. Have students place different numbers (e.g., 12, 15, 18) on the number line and then determine which ten they are closer to. - Rounding Game
Create cards with two-digit numbers. Have students draw a card and quickly round the number to the nearest ten. Students can play in pairs, taking turns and checking each other's answers.
