Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they think a community is. Write their ideas on the board. Then, introduce the YouTube video 'What is a Community? - Community for Kindergarten | Social Studies for Kindergarten | Kids Academy.' - Video Viewing (5 mins)
Play the video for the students. Encourage them to pay attention to the definition of a community, the types of communities, and the things found in a community. - Discussion (10 mins)
After the video, discuss what they learned. Go over the definition of a community, the three types (urban, rural, suburban), and the examples of things found in a community. - Activity: Community Collage (15 mins)
Have students create a collage of their own community. They can draw pictures or cut out images from magazines of places and people they see in their community (e.g., houses, schools, parks, police officers, firefighters). - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the key concepts of the lesson. Ask students to share one thing they learned about communities.
Interactive Exercises
- Community Walk
Take students on a short walk around the school or neighborhood. Have them identify different places and people they see that are part of the community. - Sorting Activity
Prepare pictures of urban, rural, and suburban scenes. Have students sort the pictures into the correct community type.
