Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they think of when they hear the word 'community.' Discuss the idea that a community is a place where people live, work, and play together. Introduce the video. - Video Viewing (7 mins)
Play the 'Types of Communities' video from Learn Bright. Encourage students to pay attention to the different types of communities and the features of each. - Discussion (8 mins)
After watching the video, facilitate a class discussion about the different types of communities. Ask students to share what they learned about urban, suburban, and rural areas. Talk about what makes each community unique. - Activity: Community Collage (15 mins)
Divide students into three groups: Urban, Suburban, and Rural. Each group will create a collage representing their assigned community using magazines, newspapers, drawings, and other materials. Encourage them to show the different features of each community (e.g., tall buildings for urban, houses with yards for suburban, farms for rural). - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the key concepts of the lesson: community, urban, suburban, and rural. Emphasize the importance of being a good citizen in any community. Mention the Learn Bright website for further activities.
