Little Sprouts: Planting Seeds and Predicting Growth!

Science Grades 1st Grade 4:08 Video

Lesson Description

In this lesson, first graders will explore the fascinating world of seeds! They will learn about different types of seeds, plant them, and make predictions about how they will grow. We'll watch a video about planting seeds and keeping track of their changes, and then do our own planting!

Key Concepts

  • Seeds need certain things to grow (soil, water, sometimes sunlight).
  • Different seeds grow into different plants.
  • Scientists make observations and predictions about the world around them.
  • Plants have different parts which help them survive.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to identify different types of seeds.
  • Students will be able to plant seeds and explain what seeds need to grow.
  • Students will be able to make predictions about how seeds will grow over time.
  • Students will be able to record their observations of seed growth on a planting card.

Educator Instructions

  • Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they know about seeds. Where do seeds come from? What do seeds need to grow? Briefly introduce the idea of making predictions and observations like scientists.
  • Video Viewing (10 mins)
Watch the video "First Grade Science: STC™ - Planting Our Seeds." Encourage students to pay attention to the different types of seeds, how the students in the video plant the seeds, and how they record their observations.
  • Discussion (5 mins)
After watching the video, discuss what the students learned. What kinds of seeds did they see? What did the students in the video do to help their seeds grow? What did they do to keep track of their seeds?
  • Planting Seeds (20 mins)
Divide students into small groups. Provide each group with soil, cups, a variety of seeds (peas, kidney beans, pumpkin, sunflower), plastic bags, and water. Have each student choose a seed to plant. Guide them to fill their cup with soil, plant their seed, and water it lightly. Tape a matching seed to the outside of the cup. Place a plastic bag over the top to help keep in moisture.
  • Creating Planting Cards (15 mins)
Give each student a "planting card" (a pre-printed sheet or a piece of paper). On the front, have them write their name, the date, and circle the type of seed they planted. They should also draw a picture of what the seed looks like. Then, they complete the sentence: "I would like to find out..." On the back of the card, have them draw a picture of what they think their seed will look like after it grows.
  • Wrap-up (5 mins)
Discuss where the students will keep their planted seeds and how they will care for them. Remind them to observe their seeds regularly and record their observations on their planting cards. Discuss the possibility of a school garden!

Interactive Exercises

  • Seed Observation Station
Set up a station with different types of seeds (unplanted). Have students use magnifying glasses to observe the seeds and draw pictures of them in their science notebooks.

Discussion Questions

  • What do you think will happen to your seed after you plant it?
  • Why do you think it's important to tape a seed to the outside of the cup?
  • What kind of plant do you think your seed will grow into?
  • What does a seed need to grow big and strong?

Skills Developed

  • Observation
  • Prediction
  • Data Recording
  • Scientific Inquiry
