Snail and Guppy探险记: Comparing Aquatic Organisms
Lesson Description
Video Resource
First Grade Science: STC™ - Comparing Snails and Guppies
Carolina Biological
Key Concepts
- Living organisms have needs (food, water, air).
- Organisms can be compared based on their characteristics.
- Observation skills are important for scientific inquiry.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify similarities and differences between snails and guppies.
- Students will be able to describe the basic needs of living organisms.
- Students will be able to make observations and record them in a notebook or chart.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by reviewing what students already know about living organisms. Ask them to name some animals they know and what they need to survive. Introduce the topic of comparing snails and guppies. Show the YouTube video: First Grade Science: STC™ - Comparing Snails and Guppies. - Observation and Discussion (15 mins)
After watching the video, facilitate a class discussion about the snails and guppies. Ask students what they observed about each organism. Encourage them to talk about their appearance, how they move, what they eat, and where they live. Record student observations on a class chart, creating two columns: one for snails and one for guppies. A third column can be used for 'Both'. - Notebooking (15 mins)
Have students create their own notebook entries about snails and guppies. They can draw pictures of each animal and write a few sentences about what they observed. Encourage them to compare and contrast the two organisms in their writing. (Differentiation: Provide sentence starters for students who need support.) - Comparison Chart (10 mins)
As a class, create a Venn diagram or a comparison chart that highlights the similarities and differences between snails and guppies. This can be done on the board or on a large piece of paper. Encourage students to contribute their observations from their notebook entries. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the key concepts of the lesson. Ask students what they learned about snails and guppies and what surprised them. Emphasize the importance of observation in science.
Interactive Exercises
- Sensory Exploration (Optional)
If possible, provide students with the opportunity to observe live snails and guppies in a small aquarium or container. Allow them to gently touch the outside of the container and observe the animals' behavior. (Note: Supervise students closely and ensure that the animals are handled with care.) - Drawing and Labeling
Have students draw either a snail or guppy and label its body parts (e.g., fins, tail, shell, eyes).
Discussion Questions
- What do snails and guppies need to survive?
- How are snails and guppies similar?
- How are snails and guppies different?
- What did you learn about snails and guppies that you didn't know before?
Skills Developed
- Observation skills
- Comparison skills
- Communication skills
- Critical thinking
