Educator Instructions

  • Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they like to do (run, play, sing). Explain that these 'doing' words are called verbs, also known as action words. Tell them they are going to watch a fun video about verbs.
  • Video Time! (8 mins)
Play the 'Verbs for Kids' video from Learn Bright (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEC0YpLKU_o). Encourage students to participate in the actions shown in the video (running, singing, walking).
  • Action Charades (10 mins)
Play a simple game of charades. Whisper an action word (verb) to a student, and have them act it out without speaking. Other students guess the action. Examples: jump, sleep, eat, draw, read.
  • Picture Verb Hunt (7 mins)
Show students pictures of people or animals doing different things (e.g., a dog barking, a girl reading, a boy kicking a ball). Ask them to identify the action word in each picture. Guide them to use simple sentences: 'The dog is barking.' 'The girl is reading.'

Interactive Exercises

Play Simon Says using only action words (verbs). For example, 'Simon Says jump,' 'Simon Says clap,' 'Simon Says spin.'
