Lesson Description
Video Resource
Key Concepts
- Rocks are natural solid materials that make up the Earth.
- There are three main types of rocks: sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous.
- Rocks are formed through different processes in the rock cycle.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify the three main types of rocks.
- Students will be able to describe how each type of rock is formed.
- Students will be able to give examples of each type of rock.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about rocks. Show a collection of different rocks and ask them to describe their properties (color, texture, size). Introduce the idea that rocks are the building blocks of our planet. - Video Viewing (10 mins)
Watch the Homeschool Pop video 'Rocks for Kids'. Encourage students to pay attention to the different types of rocks and how they are formed. - Discussion (10 mins)
After the video, discuss what students learned. Review the three types of rocks and their formation processes. Use visuals (pictures or real rock samples) to reinforce understanding. - Activity: Rock Sorting (15 mins)
Divide students into small groups and provide each group with a set of rocks. Have them sort the rocks into categories based on their appearance (color, texture, etc.). Guide them to identify which rocks are likely sedimentary, metamorphic, or igneous. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Summarize the main points of the lesson. Review the three types of rocks and their formation. Assign the quizzes for assessment.
Interactive Exercises
- Rock Collection Display
Have students bring in their own rock collections to display and share with the class. Encourage them to label each rock and describe its properties.
