- Students will be able to explain why adaptations are important for survival.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about animals and where they live. Introduce the term 'habitat' and explain that it's an animal's home. Ask: What do animals need to survive in their homes? - Video Viewing (3 mins)
Play the Tigtag video: Primary Science Lesson Idea: Adaptation. Instruct students to pay attention to the animals and plants featured and how they are special. - Discussion (7 mins)
After the video, facilitate a class discussion about the gerenuk, polar bear, and Venus flytrap. What makes each animal or plant unique? How does each survive in its environment? - Activity: Adaptation Creations (15 mins)
Divide students into small groups. Each group will choose an animal (real or imaginary) and create a drawing or model showcasing how that animal has adapted to its environment. Have them present their creation and explain the animal's adaptations.
Interactive Exercises
- Adaptation Matching Game
Create cards with pictures of animals and plants on one set and their adaptations on another. Students match the animal/plant to its correct adaptation (e.g., polar bear to thick fur).
