Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they know about birds and their beaks. Show pictures of different birds and ask students to describe their beaks. Introduce the video and explain that they will learn how bird beaks are like tools that help them eat. - Video Viewing (3 mins)
Play the YouTube video 'Beaks: Bird Feeding Adaptations (Short)'. - Discussion (7 mins)
After watching the video, discuss the different types of beaks shown and what foods they are used for. Ask students to share what they learned. - Activity: Matching Beaks to Food (10 mins)
Provide students with pictures of different bird beaks and pictures of different types of food (nuts, seeds, fish, nectar, insects). Have them match the beaks to the food they are best suited for. Students can either glue the pictures onto a worksheet or draw lines connecting them.
Interactive Exercises
- Beak Buffet
Set up a "beak buffet" with different tools (tweezers, straws, pliers, chopsticks) representing different types of beaks. Provide different foods (seeds, gummy worms, small marshmallows, water with sugar). Have students use the tools to try to pick up the food and discuss which "beak" works best for each food.
