Video Resource
Key Concepts
- Different bird beaks are shaped for different foods.
- Straight beaks are for insects and fish.
- Hooked beaks are for tearing meat.
- Cone beaks are for eating seeds.
- Mixed beaks are for eating a variety of things.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify four main types of bird beaks.
- Students will be able to describe the type of food each beak is best suited for.
- Students will be able to explain how a bird's beak helps it survive.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they know about birds and their beaks. Show pictures of different birds and ask them what they think each bird eats. Introduce the idea that a bird's beak is a tool that helps it get food. - Video Viewing (5 mins)
Play the "Bird Beaks - What do Birds Eat?" video. Tell students to pay attention to the different shapes of beaks and what each bird eats. - Discussion (10 mins)
After the video, discuss the different types of beaks and the foods they are used for. Review straight beaks, hooked beaks, cone beaks, and mixed beaks. Use examples from the video. - Activity: Beak Matching (15 mins)
Provide students with pictures of different bird beaks and pictures of different types of food (insects, fish, seeds, meat). Have students match the beak to the food it is best suited for. Alternatively, create stations with different tools (tweezers, tongs, nutcrackers, chopsticks) and have students use them to pick up different types of 'food' (small objects) to simulate different beak types. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the main points of the lesson. Ask students what they learned about bird beaks and what surprised them. Have students draw their own bird with a special beak and describe what it eats.
Interactive Exercises
- Beak Matching Game
Students match pictures of bird beaks to pictures of their preferred food sources. - Beak Simulation
Using different tools (tweezers, tongs, etc.) to simulate bird beaks, students try to pick up different food items and discuss which 'beak' is best for each food.
