Bones Rock! Exploring the Skeletal System with Music
Lesson Description
Video Resource
Key Concepts
- Skeletal System Structure
- Bone Function
- Calcium Importance
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify the major bones in the human body.
- Students will be able to describe the function of the skeletal system.
- Students will understand the importance of calcium for bone health.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Engage students by asking what they know about their bones. Ask them why bones are important. Introduce the video, highlighting that it's a fun song to help them learn the names and functions of different bones. - Video Viewing (5 mins)
Play the 'THE HUMAN BONES SONG' video by Jam Campus. Encourage students to sing along and pay attention to the names and functions of the bones mentioned. - Bone Identification (10 mins)
Display a diagram of the human skeleton. Go through the bones mentioned in the song (skull, mandible, clavicle, sternum, humerus, ulna, radius, carpals, metacarpals, phalanges, vertebral column, femur, patella, tibia, fibula). Have students point to the bones on their own bodies or on the diagram. - Function Discussion (10 mins)
Discuss the functions of the skeletal system, emphasizing support, protection of organs, movement, blood cell production, and calcium storage. Relate each function to specific bones. For example, the skull protects the brain, ribs protect the lungs and heart, etc. - Calcium Connection (5 mins)
Discuss the importance of calcium for bone health. Explain that bones are made mostly of calcium, and a diet rich in calcium helps keep bones strong. Ask students about calcium-rich foods they know. - Activity (10 mins)
Play Charades with the bones learned! Students act out the function of the bone and the students must guess the bone being acted out!
Interactive Exercises
- Skeletal System Model
Have students work in small groups to create a model of a part of the skeletal system using craft materials like construction paper, pipe cleaners, and cotton swabs. They should label the bones and explain their functions.
