Lesson Description
Video Resource
The Pattern Song | Shape and Number Patterns
Math Songs by NUMBEROCK
Key Concepts
- Repeating patterns
- Identifying pattern units
- Predicting future elements in a pattern
- Number patterns and rules
- Patterns in real life
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify repeating patterns in sequences of shapes and numbers.
- Students will be able to predict the next element in a given pattern.
- Students will be able to determine the rule governing a numerical pattern.
- Students will be able to apply their understanding of patterns to solve problems.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by playing the 'The Pattern Song | Shape and Number Patterns' video. Engage students by asking them to sing along and notice the different types of patterns presented. - Shape Pattern Exploration (15 mins)
Discuss the shape patterns from the song (square, circle, heart; door, star, dot, line). Have students draw these patterns on paper. Ask them to extend the patterns by drawing the next three shapes. Then, pose questions like: 'What would be the 10th shape in the pattern? How did you figure that out?' - Number Pattern Discovery (20 mins)
Focus on the number patterns introduced in the song (1, 3, 6,... and 2, 5, 8,...). Write these patterns on the board. Guide students to identify the rule for each pattern (e.g., adding consecutive numbers to the previous term, adding 3 to the previous term). Then, provide additional number pattern examples and have the students work individually or in pairs to discover the rules and predict the next few numbers. - Real-World Patterns (10 mins)
Discuss where patterns can be found in everyday life (e.g., calendars, brick walls, floor tiles, music). Have students share examples of patterns they observe in their surroundings. - Wrap-up and Assessment (10 mins)
Review the key concepts of the lesson. Administer the multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank quizzes to assess student understanding.
Interactive Exercises
- Pattern Extension
Provide students with a series of patterns (shapes and numbers) and have them extend the patterns by adding the next 3-5 elements. - Pattern Creation
Challenge students to create their own shape and number patterns and share them with the class. Students should also explain the rule of their patterns.
Discussion Questions
- What is a repeating pattern?
- How can you predict what comes next in a pattern?
- Where can you find patterns in the world around you?
- Can you think of a pattern that you created yourself?
Skills Developed
- Pattern recognition
- Critical thinking
- Problem-solving
- Analytical skills
- Creative thinking
