Fraction Frenzy: Representing One Whole!
Lesson Description
Video Resource
Different ways to represent 1 as a fraction | 3rd grade | Khan Academy
Khan Academy
Key Concepts
- Fractions as parts of a whole
- Equivalent fractions
- Representing the number 1 as a fraction
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to represent the number 1 as a fraction using fraction models (circles, squares, etc.).
- Students will be able to represent the number 1 as a fraction on a number line.
- Students will understand that different fractions (e.g., 2/2, 3/3, 4/4) can represent the same whole.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they know about fractions. Review the concept of a whole and parts of a whole. Introduce the idea that a fraction can also represent the number 1. - Video Viewing (7 mins)
Watch the Khan Academy video 'Different ways to represent 1 as a fraction'. Encourage students to take notes on the examples provided. - Fraction Model Activity (10 mins)
Provide students with pre-drawn circles, squares, and rectangles. Have them divide each shape into different numbers of equal parts (e.g., 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). Then, have them shade in all the parts of each shape and write the corresponding fraction (e.g., 2/2, 3/3, 4/4). Emphasize that when all parts are shaded, it represents 1 whole. - Number Line Activity (10 mins)
Draw several number lines on the board or provide students with individual number lines. Have students divide each number line into different numbers of equal segments (e.g., 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) between 0 and 1. Then, have them label each segment and identify the fraction that represents 1 (e.g., 2/2, 3/3, 4/4). - Discussion & Wrap-up (8 mins)
Discuss the activities and reinforce the key concept that any fraction with the same numerator and denominator represents 1 whole. Ask students to provide real-world examples of fractions that represent 1 (e.g., a pizza cut into 8 slices, and you eat all 8 slices).
Interactive Exercises
- Fraction Match Game
Create cards with different fractions that equal 1 (e.g., 2/2, 3/3, 4/4, 5/5) and matching cards with the number 1 written on them. Students play a memory game to match the fractions with the number 1. - Online Fraction Game
Use an interactive online game or website that focuses on fraction models and representing fractions. Examples include interactive fraction circles or number line games where students can manipulate fractions and see their values.
Discussion Questions
- Can you think of a time when you've used a fraction to represent a whole?
- Why do 2/2, 3/3, and 4/4 all equal 1?
- Can you give me another example of a fraction that equals 1?
Skills Developed
- Fraction recognition
- Visual representation of fractions
- Understanding equivalent fractions
- Number line skills
