Lesson Description
Video Resource
Key Concepts
- Number words (six, seven, eight, nine, ten)
- Connecting number words to quantity
- Recognizing and reading number words
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify and read the number words six, seven, eight, nine, and ten.
- Students will be able to associate the number words with the corresponding quantity of objects.
- Students will be able to verbally say what each number word is and how many objects are associated with it.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what numbers they already know. Review numbers one through five quickly, either written or spoken. Explain that today they will be learning new number words from six to ten. - Video Viewing (3 mins)
Play the 'How to Read Number Words 6 - 10' video from Miacademy Learning Channel. Instruct students to pay attention to how the number words are spelled and how they relate to the number of shapes shown. - Word Recognition Practice (7 mins)
Write each number word (six, seven, eight, nine, ten) on the board. Say each word clearly and have the students repeat after you. Discuss the spelling of each word, highlighting any unique features or patterns. - Quantity Association (10 mins)
Use manipulatives (e.g., blocks, counters, stickers) to represent each number from six to ten. For each number, have students count out the correct number of objects and then point to the corresponding number word on the board. Ask questions such as 'How many blocks are there?' and 'What is this word?' - Interactive Activity (10 mins)
Play a matching game. Create cards with the number words and separate cards with corresponding groups of objects (e.g., six stars, seven circles). Have students match the number word to the correct quantity. Alternatively, play number bingo where you call out the number word and students mark the corresponding number quantity on their bingo cards. - Wrap-up and Assessment (5 mins)
Review all five number words one last time. Ask individual students to read each word aloud. Assess their understanding by asking them to count a small group of objects (6-10) and then identify the correct number word.
Interactive Exercises
- Number Word Matching
Create pairs of cards: one with the number word written out (six, seven, eight, nine, ten) and another with a corresponding number of objects drawn on it. Students match the word to the quantity. - Counting and Writing
Give students a worksheet with groups of objects (6-10 in each group). Have them count the objects and then write the corresponding number word next to the group.
