  • Introduction (5 mins)

  • Video Viewing (5 mins)
    Play the "What are Rhyming Words?" video from Miacademy Learning Channel. Encourage students to listen carefully for the examples of rhyming words.
  • Discussion (5 mins)
    After the video, ask students what they learned about rhyming words. Review examples from the video, such as 'frog' and 'log', 'mail' and 'snail', 'mat' and 'sat'. What did the video say about Word Families?
  • Rhyme Time Game (10 mins)
    Play a rhyming game. Say a word and have students take turns saying a word that rhymes. For example, say 'sun' and students can say 'fun', 'run', etc. If the student provides a real rhyming word, they get a point. If they create a nonsense word, they can get an extra point for creativity! If they cannot think of anything, prompt them.
  • Word Family Fun (10 mins)
    Introduce the concept of word families. Focus on a simple word family like '-at' (cat, hat, bat, mat). Write the word family on the board/paper. Have students practice reading the words. Prompt them to create their own word families at the end of the session. Focus on words like 'ig', 'an', and 'ar'.
  • Conclusion (5 mins)
    Review what rhyming words are and why they are fun! Tell students to look for rhyming words in books they read.

Interactive Exercises

  • Rhyming Word Sort
    Prepare cards with pictures of various objects. Have students sort the cards into groups of rhyming words (e.g., cat/hat, dog/log).
  • Rhyme Creation Station
    Provide students with a word and ask them to draw a picture of it, then draw a picture of a rhyming word.
